Visual Arts

Stage 4

Students explore a variety of media and concepts in Stage 4 Visual Arts. It is structured so that students develop a foundational understanding and skill set of the ways in which different media can be used in a sophisticated and meaningful manner. This understanding is continuously built upon and extended over the duration of each course. Examples of media explored include ceramics, sculpture, photography, drawing, painting, digital art and printmaking. Students use the world around them as a driving concept and source of inspiration. A range of traditional and contemporary artists are investigated in order to guide and support the artmaking process.

Stage 5

Students are able to undertake a unique and tailored course of study with choices from twelve semester courses including photography, digital media, ceramics, sculpture, drawing and illustration, film and video and painting. This enables students to undertake both 100 and 200 hour School Certificate courses. This provides a broader course of study than offered by the mandatory course and allows students to specialise in areas that interest them. It offers a wide range of opportunities for students to develop their own interests, to be self-motivated and active learners who can take responsibility for and continue their own learning. Students acquire skills and are challenged by creatively developing and resolving their own ideas and artworks.

Stage 6

Visual Arts and Photographic and Digital Media

Stage 6 Visual Arts and Photographic and Digital Media builds understanding of the role of art, in all forms of media, in contemporary and historical cultures and visual worlds. The preliminary course provides students with both broad-based experiences in a variety of artmaking activities and develop their understanding of the visual arts through art criticism and art history. In the HSC course, students undertake a sustained and independent development of their own artworks, culminating in a body of work. Students critically and historically investigate artworks, critics and historians from both the contemporary and historical artworld.

2021 HSC Visual Arts Virtual Exhibition
